Housman played basketball, golf, tennis, softball, and ran track while at Roanoke along with being a member of the Monogram Club.
Captain of the basketball team, Houseman was an All-Little Eight selection as a senior. A great free throw shooter, he held the school record for 17 years in that category. In 1959, he was fourth in the nation from the charity stripe.
After college, Housman became a basketball official and was picked as the Top-Ranked Official in the Southern Conference. He has officiated in the Division I Regional Tournaments and Division II National Semifinals
In 1976, he received an invitation to the Olympic Trials
