A member of the Monogram Club, Jocher received the Monogram Club award as Athlete of the Year in 1958 and '59.
Co-captain of the track and cross country teams in 1958 and '59 and was named to the All-State track team as a senior. His track records were set in the distance events, the 880, mile, two mile and relays.
In cross country, he won six dual meets in 1958 to lead the team to the Virginia AAU, Little Eight and Mason Dixon Championships. In 1958, he placed 26th among a field of several hundred cross country men at the NCAA College Championship. In 1959, he recorded the fastest two mile time in the state.
