Johnston led Roanoke to the Division II National Championship in 1972. Johnston earned the NCAA Tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, averaging 23 points in the final three wins in Evansville, Indiana. Johnston set the tradition of first-team All-Americans at Roanoke, as he was the first Maroon to earn that honor in any sport.

For his career, Johnston scored 1,322 points and was known for his competitiveness, passing and long-range shooting. He set a standard for free throw shooting (.826). A Salem native, Johnston became known as Hal-lelujah for his clutch plays in big games. His career best was a 33-point effort in an upset win over nationally-ranked Mount St. Mary’s as a sophomore. Johnston would continue to serve as Associate Dean of Admissions at Roanoke College. He also supported youth athletics as an official and umpire.
