A men's lacrosse coach at Roanoke from 1972-81, Griffin put the program permanently on the map, with national rankings every year except his first season.  His brightest accomplishment was guiding the Maroons to a national championship in 1978.  The 12 wins that season was a 14-year school-record.

On 29 occasions, his lacrosse players earned All-American honors and he was named College Division Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1978.  He was also the head coach of the North-South Senior Classic in 1975 (asst.) and '79 in addition to coach of the Superstars Hall of Fame game in 1978.

Under his leadership as Athletic Director from 1977-81, Roanoke squads won four state championships and several conference titles. In the summer of 1978 Roanoke College announced its decision to shift from NCAA Division II to Division III. Griffin led the College through the transition.
