Powell had the persistent effort in training, and discipline required to be an outstanding track and cross country athlete.  Lettered seven times; four years in track and three years in cross country.

Captain of both teams during the 1966 seasons and was the recipient of the ARA Slater Best Athlete Award in 1966.  Set an outdoor half mile record in 1966 and was on the mile relay and distance medley teams that set records.
