Barnes' athletic career at Roanoke was expressed by his success on the basketball court where Barnes gave himself unselfishly for the good of the team.
Leading rebounder and free-throw shooter for the 1971-’72 team, Barnes was the team leader in field goal percentage as well for two seasons. He was selected to the All-Mason Dixon team in 1971 and '72.
His leadership, calm composure, and sense of humor added to the total balance of the national championship team in 1972.
