FOREST, Va. - Maddie McDonald and Liza Fergusson of the Roanoke College women's lacrosse team as well as Michael Hetzel of the baseball team picked up ODAC Athlete of the Week honors on Monday afternoon.
McDonald earned her second straight Offensive Player of the Week accolade while Fergusson took home Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Hetzel was selected as the Player of the Week.
It is also the second straight week that the women's lacrosse squad has swept the weekly laurels.
McDonald had herself a career day has Roanoke defeated Shenandoah 16-5 in the midweek, posting six goals and four assists for a career high 10 points. That points mark ties McDonald for eighth in the program record books. It was also the second consecutive game that the junior reset her career high point total after doing so in the previous game against Sewanee. McDonald also led in draw controls in the game, tallying five.
Fergusson spearheaded the RC defense that only allowed five goals to the Hornets, including nearly 30 scoreless minutes across the second and third quarters. The junior led the team during that contest in both ground balls and caused turnovers with four and three respectively. She also tallied a goal after completing the clear for the Maroons in the second quarter.
Hetzel played a key role in securing a playoff berth for Roanoke this week, leading them to two ODAC victories. The freshman started the week by setting a new career mark in hits with five and tying his career high in RBIs with five against Guilford. Hetzel went on to post a .733 average, a 2.445 OPS, 11 hits, and 10 RBIs on the week thanks in part to his two doubles and four home runs. He also had three multi-hit and three multi-RBI games last week, including his first career multi-homer game as he went yard twice against Guilford.
All three of these Maroons will look to help their respective teams to playoff success this week. McDonald, Fergusson, and the women's lacrosse squad are slated to take on Bridgewater tomorrow (Apr. 28) to fight for a place in the ODAC semifinals. Hetzel and the baseball team on the other hand head to Lynchburg this weekend for a best of three series with the Hornets.
