SALEM – The Roanoke College softball team opened up its 2013 season with a pair of wins over Greensboro College on Thursday evening. The #6 ranked Maroons start the season with a record of 2-0, while The Pride now sit with a mark of 1-3.
The Maroons got hot in the bottom of the first inning, as
Alea Bier reached base on a single. Her hit was followed up by a home run by
Caitlin Manuel, giving the Maroons a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Greensboro responded in the top of the second, pulling within one with a home run by Taylor Freeman.
Roanoke scored again in the bottom of the third inning, as
Hollee Warlitner hit an RBI double to center field, scoring Bier from second. The Maroons put their final run on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as
Kayla Dehart, who came on as a pinch runner, scored on a fielder's choice. Roanoke took game number one by the score of 4-1.
Bier, Manuel, Warlitner and
Kaci Frick got Roanoke's four hits during the contest, while Manual picked up two RBIs on the afternoon.
Kelly Higbie pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and striking out five. Greensboro's Kelsey Sanfilippo also pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on four hits and striking out 13.
In the second game, the Maroons scored two runs in the bottom of the third, including a run from
Alexis Roop off of heads-up base running.
Roanoke scored three more runs in the bottom of sixth inning. Manuel reached base on a walk. She advanced to third on a fielder's error during Warlitner's at-bat.
Katie Romano then reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to third on an error. During that error, both Manuel and Warlitner crossed the plate. The next batter,
Jenna Pendleton, grounded out to first, scoring Romano. At the end of the inning, Roanoke led 5-0. The Pride scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough and Roanoke won the second game, 5-2.
The Maroons only got two hits in the second game, one from Bier and one by
Stephanie Clark. Clark also picked up the win, pitching four innings, striking out two. Higbie picked up the save, giving up four hits.
The Maroons return to action on February 23-24 as they travel to Raleigh, NC to play in the Peace College Tournament. For more information on the Maroons' schedule, go to
