Roanoke SB eliminates Guilford and Lynchburg from ODAC Tourney

Maroons advance to play Va. Wesleyan Sunday at noon

The Facts:
Scores: (No. 5 seed) Roanoke 1, (No. 8 seed) Guilford 0, Roanoke 8, (No. 4) Lynchburg 5
Location: Salem, Va. – Moyer Complex

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team stayed alive in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Saturday, knocking both Guilford College (W, 1-0) and the University of Lynchburg (W, 8-5) out of the tournament.  

Roanoke joins top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University as the only two teams remaining in their pod, and the two teams will meet at noon Sunday. The Maroons need to defeat the Marlins twice to advance to the conference finals next weekend.

How it happened (Guilford):
*
Roanoke broke the scoreless tie in the fourth. The Maroons loaded the bases with one out and Allie Bell hit an infield single to bring home pinch runner Aniyah Blake. RC couldn't add to the lead in the fifth and left two on in the sixth.
*Guilford loaded the bases in the seventh with two out but Baylee Compton was able to finish what she started and force a flyout to end the game.   

Inside the numbers (Guilford):
*Compton allowed four hits and three walks in her complete-game shutout.
*Heather McQueeney went 3-3.
*Shiloh Gray allowed just one run for Guilford with seven strikeouts, who finish the season 18-23-1.

How it happened (Lynchburg):
*
The Maroons manufactured a run in the first and Lynchburg countered with two in the bottom of the frame.
*Roanoke forged a 5-2 lead with a four-run fourth. Kiran Kapur drove in a run with a double and Heather McQueeney plated two more with another double. The Hornets tied the game with three in the bottom of the inning.
*Kapur had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to put RC back ahead 6-5.
*The Maroons added two insurance runs to the count in the seventh and Compton sent the Hornets down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to earn her first save of the season.

Inside the numbers (Lynchburg):
*Kapur went 3-3 with three RBI.
*McQueeney, Erin Gorschboth, Haleigh Vaughan and Molly Houchins each had two hits. Michaels was 1-3 with a walk.
*Claire Warden earned the win in relief, tossing 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
*Alex Love had three hits for Lynchburg (25-18).
