Softball starts 2012 Season with 4-2 Mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, NC --- The Roanoke College Softball Team started the 2012 season with a 4-2 record in six games over a three-day weekend.  They traveled to North Carolina to play in the Methodist Early Bird Tournament, which they went 3-1 and split a doubleheader with Methodist on Sunday.
 
The women opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Greensboro on Friday evening.  The Maroons scored a run in their final three at bats to earn the win.
 
Stephanie Clark led the way with a single and a solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Maroons on the board first.  Felice Lowery and Alea Bier collected a hit and an RBI apiece in the season-opening victory.
 
Kelly Higbie earned a complete game victory in her first collegiate appearance with six strikeouts.
 
Against #8 Salisbury, the women fell 5-0 in a contest that was played both Friday night and early Saturday morning due to the weather.  Up 2-0 in the fifth inning, Salisbury scored three times to extend the lead and held on for the win.
 
Roanoke managed six hits, one more than the Sea Gulls, including a 3-for-4 performance by Bier.
 
A three-run fifth inning was all the offense Roanoke needed in a 3-0 victory over Piedmont in the second game of the day.  Katherine Kouri led the Maroons as she went 2-for-3 and a run.  Leona Rainey and Rhea Schleicher drove in a run apiece with base hits.
 
Higbie earned the victory with a complete game shutout, striking out two batters and scattered six hits.
 
The Maroons had a five-run offensive explosion in the sixth to seal a 7-2 victory in the final game of the tournament over York.  RC had a tournament-best nine hits and seven runs offensively, led by Rainey, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
 
Hollee Warlitner went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI as Manuel collected two base hits and scored once.  Higbie went the distance for a fourth time in two days, totaling five strikeouts and didn't allow an earned run.
 
The Maroons salvaged a split against Methodist in a tough non-conference doubleheader in Fayetteville, NC Sunday afternoon.  The Monarchs won the first game, 6-5 in eight innings but the Maroons took the twin bill, 7-6.
 
Caitlyn Manuel went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.  Katherine Kouri went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs while Felice Lowery collected two base hits and scored once.  Alea Bier hit a double and scored once for the Maroons.
 
Higbie took the loss for the Maroons on the mound, totaling two strikeouts and allowed three earned runs.
 
In the twin bill, the women ended the long weekend on a high note, scoring two seventh-inning runs to take down Methodist.
 
Clark led the way, going 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBI.  Manuel went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI while Lowery finished 2-for-3 with a run.
 
Higbie (4-2) earned the win for the Maroons with two strikeouts and allowed four earned runs.
 
The women will travel to Virginia Beach next weekend to compete in the Beach Blast Tournament Mar. 2-3.
