LYNCHBURG, VA--Behind a game-high 18 points from freshman
Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg), the Roanoke College women's basketball team improved to 14-6 on the season with a 59-42 victory over Lynchburg College on Saturday. The Maroons also improve to 10-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets, who lost both regular season meetings with the Maroons this season, fall to 7-13 overall and 4-11 in the ODAC.
After spotting the Hornets a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, the Maroons stormed back to take an 11-10 lead with 12:28 left in the first 20 minutes.
Brittany Johnson (West Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) got the run going with two free throws. Hanson then made two field goals and
Cindy McGraw (Lynchburg, VA/EC Glass) canned a three-pointer to make the score 10-9 in Lynchburg's favor. The Maroons took their first lead of the game on a Jennie Schafer (Centreville, VA/Centreville) layup.
After Lynchburg briefly regained the lead at 14-13, the Maroons took control of the game with a 14-0 run over the course of six minutes. Schafer got the run going with a layup,
Chandra Forrester (Wytheville, VA/Rural Retreat) followed with a three-point play and Hanson scored seven consecutive points to make the score 25-14 with 5:29 left in the half. Starting point guard
Veronica Kelly (Westport, CT/Staples) capped the run with a layup, give RC a 27-14 lead with 4:38 left.
The Hornets cut the lead to eight late in the half, but Schafer again scored in the paint to give Roanoke a 30-20 lead at the break. The Hornets opened the second half with a three to cut the lead to seven, but the Maroons quickly got their edge back to double-digits. The Maroons held as much as a 19-point lead in the second half.
Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) scored all six of her points in the second half, while
Amy Reedy (Linville, VA/Broadway) and
Torri Bridge (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) scored two points apiece late in the contest to get the lead out to 19.
Hanson finished the game with 18 points, 11 coming in the first half of play. She also added nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Schafer got six of her eight points in the second half, while Forrester scored four in each half. The Maroon defense limited the Hornets to just 30 percent shooting from the field, 25.7 in the second half.
