ST. MARY'S CITY, MD--Senior
Garrett Yaralian (Fripp Island, SC/Mt. Lakes) and freshman
Jon Mason (Orangeville, ONT, Canada/Orangeville) each scored three goals to lead the Roanoke College men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory in its season opening game at St. Mary's (MD) College. The Maroons, who entered the game 16th in the country, begin the season with a 1-0 overall record for the fifth consecutive season. The Sea Hawks, who have never beaten the Maroons in four all-time meetings, drop to 0-1.
The Maroons scored the only three goals of the first half and pushed the lead out to 6-0 in the early stages of the second half. Sophomore
Chris Keating (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) opened the game's scoring with an unassisted goal just under two minutes into play. After Yaralian scored the first of his three goals to make the score 2-0 after one, Mason scored his first collegiate goal to stake the Maroons to a 3-0 halftime lead. Mason's goal, which came four minutes into the second period, came on an assist by senior midfielder
Jeff Pattison (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island).
Tug Schroeder (Cincinnati, OH/Sewickley Academy), Yaralian, and
Adam Saunders (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) then gave the Maroons an insurmountable 6-0 lead early in the third. Schroeder and Yaralian scored just 10 seconds apart, while Saunders' score proved to be the eventual game-winner.
St. Mary's was finally able to beat Roanoke sophomore goalie
Matt Madalon (Darien, CT/Darien) with 8:38 to play in the third period, scoring two straight goals. At the end of three periods of play, the Maroons held an 8-3 lead after Keating added his second goal and
Mike Chase (Webster, NY/Webster) his first of the season.
The Maroons then scored five of the seven goals in the fourth quarter to come away with the 13-5 lead. Mason scored twice in the period, which also saw sophomore defender
Josh Bryant (Dover, DE/Caeser Rodney) score his first college goal. With four seconds remaining in the game, the Sea Hawks scored their fifth goal, a man-up tally.
In addition to his three goals, Yaralian also added an assist, while senior All-American candidate
Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) tallied three assists in the contest. Schroeder and junior preseason All-American
Dan Reed (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) each had a goal and an assist. Madalon finished with nine
saves, while Yaralian led the Maroons with seven groundballs with
Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) and Reed each adding five. The Maroons also killed five of six St. Mary's man-up opportunities.
The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. The Green Terror enters the game 1-0 and ranked one spot ahead of the Maroons in the preseason Face-Off Yearbook Division III poll. The game begins at 3:00pm.
