The Basics

The Lead: After facing three straight top-25 opponents, Roanoke went on the road to face Shenandoah in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday afternoon.  A late, 2-run home run in the opening game allowed the Maroons to comeback on the Hornets for a 3-2 win. With the second game tied at 1-1 in the closing innings, Roanoke used a 4-run fifth to complete the sweep of Shenandoah, 5-1.

Highlights:

  • Makayla Austin delivered an RBI base hit to score Kate Houle in the top of the second for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Shenandoah would take their first lead of the afternoon with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • With one out in the fifth, Meri Bostic reached on an error. Serenity Bishop was summoned to pinch hit and promptly delivered a home run as Roanoke re-took the lead.
  • Jada Karnes worked the final two innings, retiring the Hornets in order for the win. Karnes pitched a complete game, giving up four hits, one earned run, striking out nine.
  • Shanan Hester was 3-4 with Bishop going 1-1 with a run and two RBI.

The Basics

Highlights:

  • The Maroons would trail, 1-0, before Houle scored the tying run in the top of the second inning.
  • Roanoke would break open the tie game with a four-run, fifth inning. Jordyn DiFava singled through the left side and would advance on a Hester base hit. Adriana Rivera singled to load the bases. Houle plated DiFava with a base hit to break the tie. Hester scored on an Austin fielder's choice and a Katelyn Craghead ground out added another run. A Madison Courts sacrifice fly would wrap up the four-run frame and give Roanoke a 5-1 edge.
  • That was more than enough offense for Karnes as she pitched her second complete game of the day, giving up five hits, one run, with five more strikeouts. Hester had three more hits while Houle finished the game 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
