The Basics
Score: #10 Roanoke 5 | Bridgewater 4

The Lead: Roanoke traveled to Bridgewater to face the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) double header that would positioning for the 2022 ODAC Softball tournament on the line. The Maroons fell behind in the first inning but a five-run second would put Roanoke in front. Bridgewater made it a game but Roanoke prevailed with the 5-4 win. Game two would see the Eagles jump on their guests early and pulled away in the early innings for the 9-0 victory.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke would give up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to fall behind, 2-0, to the Eagles.
  • Makayla Austin singled ahead of a Katelyn Craghead base on balls to put a pair on in the top of the second. The bases would be full after a Bridgewater error and Austin came home on a fielder's choice by Morgan Clark. Meri Bostic tied the score with a base hit and Roanoke would be in front on a Jordyn DiFava sacrifice fly to right. Shanan Hester drove in Clark and then Bostic would score on a Rachel Sirbaugh double as the Maroons batted around in the five-run inning.
  • Jada Karnes retired the Eagles in order in the second, re-taking control of the matchup and the game would go into the third with the Maroons on top 5-2.
  • Roanoke would load the bases in the top of the third and have a chance to put the game away, however the Maroons were unable capitalize on the opportunity.
  • With individual runs in the third and sixth would make it a 5- RC lead heading into the final inning. Roanoke would once again get runners on base but the Eagles wiggled out of the jam and the game went to the bottom of the seventh.
  • Karnes induced a fly and pair of pop outs to Shanan Hester at shortstop to pick up the ODAC win.
  • Karnes got the win with a complete game, six hit, three earned run, three strikeout effort. Austin was 3-4 with a run while Hester and Sirbaugh combined for four hits and two RBI.

  • Three first inning Bridgewater runs would have the Maroons playing catchup throughout.
  • Roanoke managed just four hits over the first four innings as the Eagles built a 9-0 advantage.
  • The Maroons were unable to trim the deficit and Bridgewater earned a split with the 9-0, five-inning win.
  • Madison Courts as 1-3 with a double while Hester, Austin, DiFava, and Riley Croghan each registered one hit apiece.

Up next: Roanoke will play host to Guilford on Saturday afternoon. It is Senior Day for the Maroons as the graduating seniors will be honored prior to the double header with the Quakers.
