The Basics

Game 1
Score: Roanoke 7 | Southern Virginia 2

Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke scored three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to earn a 7-2 win in game one.

How it Happened:

  • With the score tied 2-2, Mattie Morris led off the inning with a single and was moved to second off a bunt from Kendall Penn. Taylor Carter reached on an error to load the bases before Katie Smith drove all three runs in with a double to make it 5-3.
  • Roanoke tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off a Knight error followed by a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Rathbone.
  • Emily Salsberry retired 12 straight batters, retiring the side in the second through sixth innings. Salsberry only gave up two runs off five hits to earn the win.
  • For SVU, Megan Harmon was tabbed with the loss, giving up seven runs off nine hits.
  • Morris was 2-for-2 on the night while Carter and Smith were both 2-for-4.

The Lead: An eight-run third inning lifted Roanoke to a 12-3 five-inning win in game two.

How it Happened:

  • Ruthie Williams hit a one-out single to center in the first to score Carter and Anna Clowdis, who both reached on walks, to take an early 2-0 advantage.
  • The Maroons tacked on eight more runs in the third, highlighted by two-RBI single from Briana Nardone and a two-RBI double from Williams to extend the gap to 10-0.
  • Southern Virginia got on the board in the top of the fourth but in the bottom of the inning, Rathbone lifted a sacrifice fly to score Samantha Baldwin before Olivia Simmons singled to right to bring in Bailey Perdue to make 12-1.
  • The Knights scored three in the bottom of the fifth off two hits and two RC errors but were unable to make the comeback as Taylor Asimakopoulos closed the game to earn the win giving up two runs off two hits while striking out three.
  • Teresa Wagner went the first 3.1 innings allowing only two hits and one run while striking out five. 

Up Next: Roanoke heads to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday for its conference opener beginning at 1 p.m.
