ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a 13-12 loss to St. Mary's College (MD) in non-conference action on Sunday. The Maroons, who are now 34-11 all time in season openers, start the season with a record of 0-1, while the Seahawks are now 1-0.
Roanoke jumped on the board first as
Richard Lachlan scored the first goal of the 2013 season at the 13:01 mark, assisted by
Will Carter.
Richard Lachlan and
Mike Hayden also scored in the first 15 minutes, ending the first quarter tied with the Seahawks 3-3.
Roanoke and St. Mary's split man up goals to start the second quarter, then the Seahawks' Nate Babcock scored at 6:20 to take a 5-4 lead. Just 20 seconds later,
Brayden Gerrie scored to tie the game at 5-5. St. Mary's netted one more goal before the end of the first half, to enter the locker room with a one-goal lead, 6-5.
The Seahawks opened the second half with two unassisted goals to take a three goal, 8-5 lead.
Conner DuBois netted a goal at the 10:52 mark to bring the Maroons back within two. St. Mary's scored two more unanswered goals to go ahead by four. With two minutes to play in the third quarter,
Seth Fortmann put one past the keeper to pull back within three. The teams traded goals in the final minute of the third, including a last second shot by
Tyler McWilliams that closed the quarter with the Maroons down by three, 11-8.
Mike Hayden scored his second goal of the game to open the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two. Roanoke scored back to back goals around the 7:30 mark, as McWilliams found the back of the net, followed by an unassisted man-up goal by DuBois, brought Roanoke back within one, 12-11. The Seahawks' Jordan scored 16 seconds after DuBois to go ahead by two. Lachlan netted his second goal of the game with 2:50 to play, but that would be the last goal for either team, as Roanoke fell 13-12 on the road.
Conner DuBois led the Maroons with three goals and six groundballs.
Tyler McWilliams,
Richard Lachlan and
Mike Hayden scored two goals each. McWilliams and Joe Dishaw tied for a team high two assists each.
Brayden Gerrie scored one goal on the afternoon, but led the Maroons in forced turnovers with four.
Charles Pease played all 60 minutes between the pipes and made 12 saves.
Connor Jordan and Nate Babcock led St. Mary's in scoring with three goals each. Patrick Mull and Matt Tarrant both had a team-high two assists. Albert Mitchell led all players on the afternoon, picking up nine groundballs.
St. Mary's held the edge in shots (37-35) and groundballs (33-22), while the Maroons forced more turnovers (25-17). The Maroons were 2-6 in extra man opportunities and were successful on 16-20 clears.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 23
rd as they play host to Kenyon College at Kerr Stadium. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
