SALEM, Va. --- Stevenson scored eight unanswered goals as the Mustangs pulled away in a 16-6 win over Roanoke in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. They improve to 7-0 while the Maroons slipped to 4-2.
The loss, which snapped a nine-game home winning-streak for the Maroons, was the worst defeat in Salem since dropping an 18-8 decision to then #1 Salisbury back in 2004. The next RC home game is against the Sea Gulls, ranked #3 in the country, on Wednesday, March 23.
Roanoke, ranked #9 in the latest USILA Poll, won 13-of-24 face-offs and were successful in 17-of-19 clear attempts. Stevenson, ranked second in the country, out-shot RC, 64-36, including 33-23 in shots on goal, while holding a slight edge in groundballs, 38-36. The Mustangs were 21-of-25 in clear attempts and 2-of-3 in man-up opportunities.
Roanoke had the momentum through the first period.
Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School) scored the first Maroon goal followed by
Reid Mayberry (Annandale, VA, W.T. Woodson) score from
Jimmy McNeely (Bel Air, MD, C. Milton Wright) to tie the contest at 2-2.
Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS) scored the go-ahead goal to give the Maroons the 3-2 advantage with five-minutes remaining.
From that point on it was all Stevenson as they reeled off eight-straight tallies over the next 20 minutes to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 6:10 remaining in the third period.
Keeley scored his second goal of the contest off a feed from
Noah Gibby (Terrace Park, OH, Mariemont) to end the run with 2:41 left in the third quarter, but the damage was done.
Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham) scored his only goal of the game with 11:16 remaining in the fourth, but the Mustangs' Richie Ford scored three unanswered goals to give the Mustangs a 10-goal cushion with 6:20 left to play.
Ford led all scorers with three goals and an assist for four points on the afternoon. He totaled 14 shots, seven on target, with seven groundballs. Jimmy Dailey finished with two goals and a game-best four assists for a game-high six points on the day. Sean Calabrese had two goals and two assists while four other Mustangs netted two goals apiece.
Defensively, Evan Douglass had a game-high five caused turnovers with four groundballs, followed by Kyle Menendez, who caused three turnovers and collected two groundballs. Ray Witte won 11-of-24 face-offs and collected seven groundballs for SU.
Keeley led Roanoke with two goals while Gibby dished out two assists. Both players tallied a team-high six shots for RC, with Keeley also winning 4-of-6 face-offs.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) was held scoreless, but won 8-of-15 face-offs with four groundballs.
Michael Lintner (Houston, TX, Episcopal) collected a team-best five groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Eric DeLong (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg) added two groundballs and a team-high three caused turnovers.
Tim Hamernick (Darien, CT, Darien) added two CT's and three groundballs.
Ian Bolland finished the day with 17 saves for Stevenson.
Mike Hardon (Devon, PA, The Gunnery) had eight stops in goal for Roanoke in the first half.
Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) stopped nine shots in the second half for the Maroons.
The men return to action on Saturday, March 19 as they travel highway 460 east to take on conference-rival Lynchburg College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shellenberger Field.
