LANCASTER, Pa. -Roanoke scored four unanswered goals within the first two-minutes of play and rolled to a 19-13 win at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The win propels the Maroons to 2-0 on the young season, while th Diplomats drop to 1-1.
Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary) accounted for three goals to open the contest. He assisted on four more, one in each quarter, before the day was out. The win marks the third-straight against F&M, improving to 3-2 in the series.
Roanoke, ranked fifth in the USILA Pre-Season Poll, held a slight edge in shots (46-37) and shots on goal (29-24) and won 19-of-36 face-offs on the afternoon. The Maroons, who were 19-of-21 in clear attempts, won the groundball war, 34-27, and were 4-for-7 in man-up opportunities.
The Maroons finished the opening stanza with a 7-3 advantage, not before scoring seven of the first eight goals of the day. F&M scored twice in the final 90-seconds to end the quarter.
The Diplomats settled down and held RC to only three second-period goals and went into the half with a 10-5 deficit. Down 8-3 following a
Joey Coretti (East Grand Rapids, MI, East Grand Rapids ) goal with 12:53 remaining before halftime, F&M scored back-to-back goals as Colin McKew assisted both James Wenk and Billy Kemper to pull within three.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) and
Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School) scored the final two goals of the half to go into the locker room with the five-goal advantage.
The third quarter was a high-scoring affair, with each team netting six goals apiece. Franklin & Marshall scored two of the first three goals to make it, 11-7 before the quick hitting Maroons scored three more goals in a span of 1:29 as
Noah Gibby (Terrace Park, OH, Mariemont), Keeley and Coretti all found the back of the net to take a 14-7 lead with 7:22 remaining in the third.
F&M fought back to scored four of the ensuing five goals to close to four, 15-11, but from there it was all RC, as they Maroons reeled off four-straight goals and held on for the win.
Keeley finished with three goals and three assists as Tuma collected eight groundballs, won 16 face-offs and scored three goals with an assist.
Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham),
Reid Mayberry (Annandale, VA, W.T. Woodson), Coretti and Gibby each scored twice for the Maroons.
Mike Hardon (Devon, PA, The Gunnery) and
Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) each totaled five saves for Roanoke. Cameron Setian and Ben Feldberg combined for 10 saves for the Diplomats.
The Maroons return on the road on March 6 as they travel south to Atlanta, GA to take on Birmingham-Southern at Decatur High School. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
