SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke had 17 players in the scoring column in a 22-7 win over St. Mary's (MD) at Kerr Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 2-0 on the season while the Seahawks dropped to 0-1.
Tied 3-3 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter, Roanoke scored seven unanswered goals to make it, 10-3 just over one minute into the second period. The Maroons, ranked #5 in the USILA Top-20 poll, outscored their opponent, 12-4 the rest of the game.
The Maroons now hold a 8-1 series lead over the Seahawks, who received votes in the latest USILA national poll. The 22 goals were the most in the series while the 15-goal win margin was the most in the Div. III-era at Roanoke.
Roanoke outshot St. Mary's, 54-37 and held a 46-29 groundballs advantage. The Maroons won 18-of-32 face-offs, led by
Greg Khanzadian (Syracuse, NY, Christian Brothers)with 15, along with a team-best 12 groundballs. The men were also 25-of-30 on clear attempts.
Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)scored a team-best five goals, which tied a career-high. He passed Wil Goldthwait for 13
th on the career scoring list with 181 points. He is two goals shy of becoming 10
th on the career goals list (114).
Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)had one goal and one assist to tie
Bill Doxanas '72 for 23
rd on the career scoring list (124 pts).
Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)had three goals in his second collegiate game, followed by
Brian Foley (Charlotte, NC, Myers Park)with two goals and two assists.
Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)finished with two goals and one assist while freshman
Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS)added two goals for the Maroons.
Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)stopped 10 shots in goal this afternoon to give him career save #500. He passed
John Neurohr (Garden City, N.Y, Garden City HS)'81 for seventh on the career saves list at Roanoke. Defensively,
Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)collected seven groundballs.
Dennis Rosson led the Seahawks with two goals. Albert Mitchell won 10-of-23 face-offs and collected five groundballs. Stu Wheeler finished with 14 saves in goal.
The men are back in action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 24 as they take on ODAC's newest men's lacrosse member, Randolph College in the Wildcats' season-opener. Game time is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
