The men's lacrosse team went up 6-1 after the first quarter and never looked back as they defeated St. Mary's, 14-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 2-1 on the season while the Seahawks dropped to 2-3.
Roanoke outshot St. Mary's, 43-29 while winning the groundball battle, 41-31 including 26-16 in the first half. The Maroons were 20-of-23 in clear attempts and won 14-of-24 face-offs.
Billy Cameron led the Maroons with five groundballs and won 8-of-11 face-offs.
Stephen Simmons led Roanoke with six groundballs. Cameron passed Ben Love '06 for third in career groundballs with 324.
With the score tied 1-1, the Maroons scored five unanswered goals to take a five-goal lead at the end of the first, 6-1.
In the second quarter, the Seahawks scored three unanswered goals, two with a man-up to pull within two with eight minutes remaining in the half.
The Maroons pulled away in the second half, scoring seven of the next eight goals to make it 13-5 to secure their second-straight win.
Matt Quinton scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Maroons.
Pat March had three goals and two assists to pace the Maroons while
Ben Sultze had three goals for his sixth goal of the season.
Chas Carlson added two goals and three assists. He is now ranked 11
th all-time in assists with 64 for his career. He has also moved up to 29
th all-time in career points (110).
Jake Dorsey finished with nine saves in the win while J.J. Strombrosky had 10 in the losing effort. Chris Becraft led the Seahawks with three goals and one assist on the afternoon.
The men come back home to host OAC member Kenyon on Wednesday, March 12. The Maroons defeated Kenyon, 14-8 in their only meeting in 2003. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
