RC Baseball Sweeps William Peace to Open 2016

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Basics - Game One
Score: Roanoke 4, William Peace 1
Records: Roanoke 1-0, William Peace 3-4
Location: Cary, N.C.

The Lead: The Maroons open up their 2016 season with a road victory over William Peace on a strong pitching effort from Harrison Richards.

How it Happened:
  • Richards threw six complete innings for Roanoke and picked up the win while allowing zero earned runs and striking out six.
  • Ethan Delahunty picked up his first collegiate save after throwing a scoreless ninth. Diego Meneses bridged the gap and threw a hitless seventh and eighth inning while striking out three.
  • Sean Guida scored the first run of RC's season after a Will Decker single drove him in in the first inning.
  • In the fifth inning, the Maroons worked the base paths after Anthony Teixeira stole second and Scott Ellis scored from third on the throw.
  • Craig Kiley helped finish Roanoke's scoring for the afternoon after he doubled to right field, which drove in Guida and Will Black.
  • Offensively, Decker was 2-4 from the plate with a double and one RBI. Kiley recorded two RBI on the day off of one double and Ellis also had a double of his own to go along with a stolen base as well.

The Basics - Game Two
Score: Roanoke 4, William Peace 3
Records: Roanoke 2-0, William Peace 3-5
Location: Cary, N.C.

The Lead: Roanoke swept the doubleheader by pushing across a run in the eighth to top William Peace 4-3.

How it Happened
  • The Maroons jumped on the board in the top-half of the first inning when Drew Mikula delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Dan Brodeur to make it 1-0 RC.
  • With the score 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Roanoke loaded the bases with no outs and took the lead when Lucas Nowlin drew a walk to plate Ross Strickland to make it 2-1.
  • Guida would then follow with a sacrifice fly to score Dean Hermanson to make it a 3-1 ball game.
  • With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, William Peace rallied and cut the RC lead to 3-2 on a Nick Cole double and tied the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trevor Nanney.
  • Roanoke got what proved to be the game-winning run in the next half inning when Kevin Oakey singled to centerfield and was lifted for pinch runner Dan Irwin. Irwin stole second and came around to score when Strickland's bunt was mishandled by the pitcher.
  • William Peace threated in their final at bat, loading the bases with two out but Kiley was able to strike out Derek Beale to secure the sweep for RC.
  • Kiley picked up the win after going 1.2 innings in relief, allowing a hit, while striking out a pair. John Ruhlman started for Roanoke and went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five.
Up Next: Roanoke will travel to North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
