GREENSBORO, NC - The Roanoke College women's basketball team picked up the first win for new head coach Carla Flaherty on Saturday with a 64-57 win over Meredith in the Guilford Tip-Off Classic.
The win gives Carla Flaherty a 1-0 record to start her first season as head coach of the Maroons. This is the first time as a head coach, including her first four years at Lasell College, that Flaherty begins her season with a 1-0 record. The Maroons have won the opening contest for the last two seasons, as Roanoke defeated Alma College 83-68 in the Marriott Invitational.
Sophomore
Cary Beahm scored a career-high 20 points in the victory over Meredith on Saturday. Beahm shot 7-9 from the floor, as well as adding a perfect 6-6 mark from the free throw line. She also tallied one rebound, one assist, two steals and a block for her outstanding afternoon. Also having a standout day for Roanoke was
Tatum McKee, who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also notched five steals and one assist in the victory. McKee finished with a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line as well. The Maroons shot 43.8 percent from the field on Saturday, the Maroons best shooting game since playing Maryville on December 16
th 2013.
Roanoke got off to a 3-0 start in the first three minutes off of a layup and free throw from Beahm. With the game tied at 5-5 at 14:28, free throws from McKee and Beahm gave Roanoke a two point, 9-7 advantage in the opening seven minutes. Beahm and McKee combined for another four points to give Roanoke a six-point, 13-7 lead with 10 minutes to play. Six points would be Roanoke's largest lead of the half, seen once again at 3:13 left in the period when
Markia Beckwith hit a layup to put the Maroons ahead 23-17. The Avenging Angels outscored the Maroons 4-2 in the final two minutes, with Roanoke taking a 25-21 advantage into the locker room at half.
Just like the first half, Beahm scored the first points of the second period with a jumper in the opening moments. Roanoke outscored Meredith 11-4 in the first three minutes with
Kelsey Smith hitting a pair of layups, a jumper from
Bridget Holleran, all capped off by a trey from Smith to go ahead 36-25, an 11 point lead. The Maroons pulled ahead by 13 after Beckwith,
Meghan Gadell and
Kanisha Wiley combined for eight points, including a three-pointer from Gadell, for a 44-31 advantage. With 10 minutes to play, Beahm hit back to back baskets, followed by a layup from McKee to put Roanoke ahead by 16, 50-34. Roanoke's lead hit 20 points at 1:23 remaining, when Beahm hit a jumper on the front end of an old fashioned three point play. Roanoke would finally put away the Avenging Angels 64-47 in the opening game of the 2014-15 season.
Kelsey Smith and
Markia Beckwith each finished with eight points for Roanoke, shooting an identical 3-8 from the field. Smith finished the night with one rebounds while Beckwith tallied three assists to lead the team in the category.
Jessi Hayes led the Avenging Angels with 14 points, shooting 5-15 from the floor, as well as hitting two of Meredith's three treys for the night. Kim Hinton followed with 12 points and a team high eight rebounds. Laquetta Hairston finished with four rebounds and a team-high four assists.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, November 16
th as they take on #18 ranked University of Mary Washington in the second game of the Guilford Tip-Off Classic. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
