Baseball Falls, 9-6 to Emory & Henry

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke gave up eight runs in the first two innings and couldn't recover in a 9-6 loss to Emory & Henry Tuesday evening at Kiwanis Field. The Maroons dropped to 10-15 overall, 6-8 in the ODAC. The Wasps improved to 2-15, 1-11 in conference play.

The Maroons, now 11-6 against the Wasps, were on their heels early as Mark Wimmer (Salem, VA, Salem)(3-1) gave up seven earned runs in 1.2 innings. It was his first loss of the season.

John Terlesky (Charlottesville, VA , Albermarle), however, pitched his best game of the season in relief. The junior went 7.1 innings, allowing one run with a career-high eight strikeouts.

Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River)drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first and stole his 12th base of the season as Alan Moore (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)came to the plate with one out. Moore smashed his fifth home run of the season to close it to within three with Jay Laramore (Pfafftown, NC, Guilford)on deck. He followed Moore's act with a solo shot left field to make the score, 5-3.

Down 8-3 in the bottom of the second, Caylen Baire (St. Albans, WV, St. Albans)reach base on a fielder's choice and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Travalini delivered an RBI-double, his sixth of the season, to score Baire to put the Maroons within four.

After the Wasps scored a run in the fourth, the Maroons answered back with a two-run fifth inning. Moore sparked the two-out rally with a walk, followed by Laramore's single to left center and advanced to second to put both runners in scoring position. Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg)single through the left side brought home Moore and put runners on the corners.

Barrett Henderson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spirng)RBI-single scored Laramore and advanced Manthe to third. But unfortunately, Henderson was thrown out at second to end the rally with the score 9-6.

The Maroons threatened both the sixth and the ninth innings with runners on first and second with one out. But the bats went cold, ending the scoring opportunities as Roanoke left seven runners on base over the last four innings.

Moore went 2-for-4 in his 13th multi-hit game of the season, scoring two runs with two RBI's. He became the school's new home run king with 15 for his career. The school's record-holder in doubles, hits and total bases is only one run shy of tying the career runs record and four RBI's from tying the career mark in that category.

Laramore finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and tied a season-high two runs. In his eighth multi-hit game, the senior hit his third home run of the season, seventh of his career. Manthe and Henderson both collected two hits and drove in a run. Manthe is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak while Henderson had his third multi-hit game in four games.

The men will travel to play against Bluefield College (Va.) tomorrow in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
