SALEM, VA-The Roanoke College baseball team got its third consecutive victory, all three coming in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, with a 21-2 win over Emory & Henry College on Wednesday night in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 4-13 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC, while the Wasps fall to 3-15, 1-6 in league play.
Four batters into the bottom of the first inning and the Maroons owned a 3-0 lead.
Noah Davidson drew a four-pitch walk and
Brennan Thacker followed with a stand-up triple to the gap in right, giving the Maroons a 1-0 lead. The next pitch saw
Alan Moore knock a double off the wall in left to give RC a 2-0 lead. On the second pitch he saw, Nate Unroe tripled to deep centerfield and the Roanoke lead was 3-0. Two batters later the Maroon lead jumped out to 5-0 on a
Shane Spikes double down the leftfield line, scoring Unroe and
Brad Greenway, who reached on an error.
Already ahead 8-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Maroons added two more runs on a Spikes homerun to left center.
Daniel Gills hit a solo shot to left in the bottom of the third, helping the Maroons take a 12-2 lead.
An Unroe double to the gap in right in the bottom of the fourth inning scored two more runs for the Maroons, giving the home team a 14-2 lead.
The Maroons scored at least one run in the first six innings and finished the night with 19 hits, three of which were homeruns.
Jimmy Winterer got the win for the Maroons, going six innings and allowing just one earned run. He struck out five batters.
Jani Kamphuis pitched the final four innings, striking out five batters. Of the 13 Maroon batters that had at least one at-bat, eight had hits in the contest, including Thacker, Moore, and Spikes who all had three.
The Maroons are back in action on Thursday in another home game, that against Milligan College. The game at Salem's Kiwanis Field begins at 6:00pm.
