SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating visiting Averett University 69-53 on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 3-5 on the season while the Cougars fall to 4-3 overall. Prior to Saturday's win, the Maroons had last earned a victory on November 22nd, that at Ferrum.
The Maroons trailed only once in Saturday's game, that a brief 9-8 Averett lead with just about five minutes into the first half. Sophomore
Sara Keller scored off of a
Lindsay Reynolds pass with 13:35 left to give the Maroons a 10-9 lead, a lead they would never give up. That basket also sparked a 12-0 Roanoke run that at the end saw the host team owning a 20-9 lead. Sophomore guard
Torri Bridge had three-point play in the run, while
Stephanie Morrisey added a layup and her first three-point field goal of the year.
After Averett's Jasmine Adams was able to get the Maroon lead down to single-digits, 20-11, the Maroons again went on a scoring run. This time it was a 10-3 run that saw them take a 16-point lead, 30-14, with 7:27 left in the first half.
Erin Hanson and Cindy McGaw each had four points in that run. The Cougars, however, took advantage of free throw opportunities in the late stages of the opening 20 minutes, chipping the Maroon lead to just seven at the break. Averett scored seven points from the line in the final five minutes of the first and overall had 14 free throws in the opening half.
Up by seven at the break, the Maroons quickly put the game out of reach in the opening moments of the second half. McGraw opened the half with a three-pointer to push the RC lead back to double-digits where it would stay the rest of the way. The Maroon lead would get out to as many as 24 points, that coming on an
Ashley Showalter free throw with 4:36 to play.
Hanson finished the game with a game-high 16 points, while McGraw added 14 and Morrisey a season-high 10 points. The Maroons had assists on 19 of their 27 field goals, four coming from
Lindsay Reynolds, and also controlled the battle of the rebounds 49-29.
Jasmine Adams scored a team-high 15 points for the Cougars. Lisa Waller came off the bench to score seven points, making all three of her shots including Averett's only three-pointer.
The Maroons are off until a January 3rd matchup against Hollins University in Roanoke, VA.
