LYNCHBURG, VA--Behind 13 points from freshman
Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) and 12 from senior Jennie Schafer (Centreville, VA/Centreville), the Roanoke College women's basketball team improved to 9-4 on the season with a 63-45 win over Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Saturday. The Maroons also move above .500 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play for the first time this season; the team is now 5-4 in league play. The Wildcats, who beat the Maroons in Lynchburg, VA last season, fall to 1-10, 1-7 in the ODAC. Roanoke has now won six consecutive games, the team's longest streak since early in the 2000-01 season.
Each team took the lead in the early stages of Saturday's game, but an
Annie Roehm (Weston, CT/Weston) layup with 14:03 left in the first half gave the Maroons the lead for good. That layup was part of a 13-2 Maroon run, a run that saw
Kayce Smith (Chattanooga, TN/The Baylor School) score three points and Schafer four. Holding a nine-point lead, 26-17, with 6:27 to play in the first, the Maroons allowed the Wildcats to trim the lead to just four points with just under five to go. Roanoke countered with an 8-2 run of their own to push the lead to double-digits, 34-24. Sophomore
Cindy McGraw (Lynchburg, VA/EC Glass) hit a jumper with just two seconds left in the half to give the Maroons the 12-point lead at the break.
The Maroons shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half but were outrebounded 21-16. Hanson had eight of her 13 points in the half, while
Brittany Johnson (West Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) came off the bench to record three steals.
Roanoke's second half lead got out to as many as 25 points, that a 58-36 edge following two
Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) free throws with 8:08 to play.
Torri Bridge (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) scored her first college points with 15 seconds to play to give RC a 20-point lead, but RMWC scored with just four ticks left to make the final margin 18 in Roanoke's favor.
In addition to the first college points scored by Bridge, Roanoke's
Sara Keller (Delaware, OH/Buckey Valley) also got her first points, connecting on two free throws midway through the second. Johnson finished the day with four steals for the Maroons.
Roanoke is back in action on Sunday afternoon in a conference game against the Hornets of Lynchburg College. The Maroons and Hornets will get their contest under way at 4:00pm in Roanoke's Bast Center.
