SALEM, VA-The Roanoke College women's basketball team led from wire-to-wire in a 66-41 win over Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Friday evening in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 6-9 overall on the season, snapping a two-game losing streak. The Maroons also improve to 5-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Randolph-Macon Woman's College drops to 4-10 on the season and now own a 2-7 mark against league opponents.

Jennie Schafer (Centreville, VA/Centreville) opened the scoring 38 seconds in with an old-fashion three-point play, getting hacked on the arm on the game's first shot. The Wildcats responded by making one of a two-shot foul to make the score 3-1 with 17:38 to play. That two-point deficit would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way.
Veronica Kelly (Westport, CT/Staples) and
Cindy McGraw (Lynchburg, VA/EC Glass) each got two point field goals to make the score 7-1 and minutes later
Lindsay Reynolds (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) drained a three-pointer and the Maroons quickly owned a 10-3 lead. Ahead by seven points, 16-9, with 7:06 to go, the Maroons used a 7-0 run to take a 14-point lead. McGraw made consecutive three-pointers to cap the run which ended with 3:27 to go in the first.
At the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the Maroons owned a 29-13 lead, holding the Wildcats to just five field goals. Utilizing a full-court press, the Maroons also forced 16 RMWC turnovers in the first half. At the end of the first period of play, McGraw had eight points and two rebounds for the Maroons. Kelly finished the opening 20 minutes with six points, three rebounds, and four steals.
The second period of play featured a 13-2 Roanoke run in the first nine minutes, allowing the team to open up a 27-point advantage, 42-15. Kelly had two three-pointers in the run, while Reynolds added a triple of her own and Schafer scored on two layups. Roanoke's lead got out to as many as 30 points, 50-20, in the half. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to 23, but a three-pointer from
Michelle Ely (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) and a deep jumper from
Amy Reedy (Linville, VA/Broadway) pushed the edge back to as much as 28 late in the contest.
Kelly completed the game with a team-high 12 points for the Maroons, also adding two assists and four of the team's 10 steals. Schafer finished with nine points, while Reynolds, McGraw, and Ely all had eight. In all, 11 Maroons made a dent on the scoreboard, including
Ashley Nesbit (Bowdoin, ME/Mt. Ararat) who had three free throws and
Brittany Johnson (West Simsbury, CT/West Simsbury) who had two points, three rebounds, and two assists in 10 minutes of action.
Amy Dameron led the Wildcats with 14 points, 10 of those coming at the free throw line where she went 10-for-11. Leading scorer Meghan Stensrud came off the bench to drop in 12, but went just 6-for-21 from the field in the process. She also had four assists and two steals.
Roanoke is back in action on Saturday with a road contest against the Eagles of Bridgewater College. The Eagles enter the game with an 11-4 overall record and a 9-2 record in the ODAC after getting a 66-56 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday.
