SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team had it's two game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 loss to visiting Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Maroons fall to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC while the Marlins remain undefeated with an 8-0 overall mark and a 4-0 record against league opponents. The loss also snapped a two-game winning streak for the Maroons in this series.
After controlling much of the play in the early stages of the first half, the Maroons went into a bit of a slump over the final five minutes which the Marlins took advantage of. With just 35 seconds to play before halftime, Marlin freshman Kimmy Bausch redirected a Laura Weidema shot, from outside the circle, and into the goal.
Not much time elapsed in the second half when
Kelley Busik (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) pounded in a loose ball off of a Roanoke corner to bring the Maroons even at one. The tie didn't last long, however. The Marlins struck right back, just 1:24 later, on a goal by senior Gayla Dalrymple-Smith on a VWC corner. Cara Byrd drug the ball from the top of the circle down the left side and found Dalrymple-Smith, who hit a one-timer for the score.
For the second time in the game, the Maroons forced a tie, getting their second goal with 18:23 left in regulation.
Rachel Flint (Towson, MD/Towson) sent a pass from the left post across the goal mouth where
Sara Lundgren (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) was able to put in the tying score. With just under seven minutes to go and with the ball in their own defensive half, the Marlins hit a long ball deep into Roanoke territory where Bausch sent a crossing pass that was eventually tapped into the goal by freshman Megan May for the game-winner.
Virginia Wesleyan goalie Margie Baker made eight saves in the contest with the Maroons outshooting the Marlins, 16-11. Roanoke keeper
Beth Lichty (Denver, CO/St. Mary's) stopped three late shots to keep the Maroons within one goal.
Roanoke is back in action on Sunday with another home contest, this time against non-conference opponent Catholic University. The Maroons and Cardinals will face-off at 1:00pm.
