The Lead: After struggling in the season opener in Georgia, the Roanoke golf team was back in action at the two-day (36-hole) Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Whispering Pines. The event was held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines in Southern Pines North Carolina. Roanoke found themselves 12-over par after just five holes but steadied their play to finish the opening round at 21 over (309) and in 5
th place. Day two saw the Maroons rally to come all the way back to tie Christopher Newport (#36) with five holes to play. The rally would fall short with Roanoke completing the best team score of the day (+15) but it wasn't enough as the Maroons would place third.
How it Happened:
Round One:
- Senior Palmer Cuny posted his best round of the semester with an even par 72, including a birdie and eagle down the stretch. Fellow senior Sean Furlong added a 6-over 78.
- Sophomore Will Miele gave RC three in the 70's with a 79 while last week's leader Sean Hickey finished the 6,949 yard, par 72 layout with an 8-over par round.
Round Two:
- Cuny would once again pace Roanoke, finishing at +1, 73, and completing the event in 2nd place out of 92 golfers.
- Hickey moved up 17 spots with a 2-over par 74. Furlong finished one stroke behind Hickey in the final standings after recording a 77 while Miele completed his second consecutive 79.
Up Next: The Maroons will take two teams (B & C) to Farmville to compete in the Manor Spring Invite on March 15-16.
