FOREST, Va. - Freshman Paige Breuer of the Roanoke College women's basketball team was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference as announced by the conference on Thursday morning.
Breuer is the program's first ODAC Rookie of the Year in 20 years as the only other Maroon to earn the honor was Erin Hanson in 2005. She also becomes the first player in program history to be selected as Rookie of the Year and to an all-conference team in the same campaign.
Breuer put together an impressive rookie season, leading the young RC squad in scoring as Roanoke's primary ball-handler. The North Dakota native averaged 13.0 points per game, recording four 20+ point games to place sixth in the ODAC in scoring. However, she most notably posted a free throw percentage of 90.7%, making 73 of 81 free throws, to lead the conference in the category. It is the first time since the 2011-12 season that a freshman has topped the free throw category in the ODAC, the first time since 2015-16 that a Roanoke player was first in the league in the category, and is the best single season free throw percentage in recorded program history (min. 35 free throws made). To add, Breuer ranked third in all of Division III in the category which put her first out of just three freshmen in the top 50 nationally.
Breuer was the only freshman to be selected to an All-ODAC team this season. Additionally, her all-conference nod makes this the fifth straight year that the Maroons have had a player on the second team.
Roanoke finished the year fifth in the ODAC, three spots higher than their projected finish in the preseason poll, to earn themselves a spot in the ODAC quarterfinals. Breuer and the Maroons went on a seven-game win streak over the course of January and February to finish with a winning 9-7 record in conference play.
