The Lead: The 2024-25 Roanoke College golf team opened the season in Kentucky at the Transylvania Fall Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event was played at the University Club of Kentucky, contested at par 72 over the Big Blue course. The Maroons got off to a slow start and would have to endure a two- and half-hour weather delay on the opening day. Once the round resumed, Roanoke would see themselves in eighth place when another storm halted play and ultimately cut the event to 36-holes. RC would go 4-under par to finish out the first round and after the completion of the second round, Roanoke finished 5
th in the 19-team field.
How it Happened:
Round One:
- Roanoke rallied to post 1-over par 289. Freshman Sam Dolan carded a 2-under par 70 to lead the Maroons. Palmer Cuny found himself just outside the top 10 with an even par 72.
- Sophomore Will Miele birdied two of his final holes to post a 1-over par 73 while Sean Furlong rounded out the scoring with a 74.
Round Two:
- Cuny birdied his first two holes of round two but stumbled to the turn, sitting at 1-over par. The senior birdied four of his final eight holes to move up 10 spots and record a top 5 finish in the 96-golfer field.
- Dolan followed up his 2-under with a 1-under 71 to tie Cuny in the top 5. In his first collegiate event, Dolan was one of just seven golfers to complete both rounds in red numbers.
- Furlong would card a late birdie to fire a 76 with Miele posting a 77.
Next for the Maroons: Roanoke will travel to Harrisonburg to compete at the Kinder-Williams Memorial Tournament hosted by Bridgewater. The Maroons will look to repeat their win at the same event last fall when they tee off on September 16
th.
