The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team scored in six straight innings en route to a 17-11 win over Ferrum in an early-week ODAC matchup at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Highlights:

  • The Panthers got on the board first with a run in the top of the second before Roanoke took over. After both Owen Lawn and Ty Staz reached base, Tucker Schiavoni doubled down the rightfield line that scored Lawn from third, giving the Maroons. With one out Carson McCusker grounded out to first base, but it allowed T. Staz to score, giving Roanoke the lead that they would not give up. Jacob Bonzon followed up with a triple to right field that Schiavoni scored on, puttin the Maroons ahead 3-1 after two innings.
  • After Conner Butler added a run for the Maroons in the third, Roanoke added three in the fourth. With two outs, Jonny Wall doubled to right center and was followed with a triple by Buter to left center, extending the Maroons' lead to 5-1. Lawn then stepped to the plate and belted a two-run home run over the wall in left field to put Roanoke ahead 7-1 after four.
  • It looked like Ferrum was going to make it a game with three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Maroon lead down to 7-4. But Roanoke responded by getting back two of the runs in the bottom with both Brody Langlotz and Bonzon scoring to put the Maroons back up 9-4.
  • Roanoke blew the game wide open in the sixth inning. Lawn led off with a walk and a deep single by T. Staz allowed him to come around and score. After T. Staz stole second and advanced to third on a Schiavoni groundout, Langlotz singled to left that T. Staz scored off of. Now with two outs, Bonzon singled up the middle with Langlotz heading to second. A walk by Mason Staz loaded the bases for Wall. A long, deep double by Wall to left cleared the bases for 3 RBIs and gave the Maroons the 14-4 lead. A double by Butler would push the advantage one higher after six complete, 15-4.
  • The teams traded two runs each in the seventh with runs by Justyn Steens and Langlotz for Roanoke. With the Maroons leading 17-6 going into the ninth, Ferrum put a scare into several fans, scoring five runs with two outs to cut the lead down to 17-11 before a strikeout by Gardner Meeks sealed the Roanoke win.
  • Isaac Brooks earned his first career win in relief for the Maroons.
  • Wall, T. Staz, and Langlotz each finished with three hits with both Wall and T. Staz scoring two runs and Langlotz rounding the bases three times. Wall had a game-high four RBI.

Up next: Roanoke is right back on the field tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4 when they host Maryville (Tenn.) in a non-conference matchup. First pitch with the Scots is scheduled for 3 p.m.
