Location: Bridgewater, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team dropped a heartbreaker in game one of an ODAC doubleheader against Bridgewater on Sunday after the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off win over the Maroons, 6-5. In game two, The Maroons powered through for the 18-3 win to split the two-game series.

Highlights:

  • The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four hits. Owen Lawn immediately responded for the Maroons in the top of the second with a leadoff home run to right field to cut the Bridgewater lead down to 2-1.
  • BC put their lead back up to two in the bottom of the fourth with a single run. Roanoke responded by tying the score in the top of the fifth, using a combination of three Eagle errors and hits by Jacob Bonzon, Mason Staz, and Conner Butler to pull even at 3-3.
  • In the next inning, Ty Staz led off with a walk before Brody Langlotz blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Maroons a 5-3 lead after six complete. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh scored an Eagle run to cut Roanoke's lead down to 5-4.
  • BC would use a pair of throwing errors and capped the comeback with a single up the middle for the walk-off win.

Score: Roanoke 18, Bridgewater 3
Records: Maroons 21-11, 12-4 ODAC; Eagles 13-21, 6-10 ODAC

Highlights:

  • Bonzon led off game two with a single and came around to score on a Butter single through the left side, putting the Maroons ahead 1-0 after one.
  • A string of hits for the Eagles in the bottom of the second allowed them to score three runs and take a 3-1 advantage over Roanoke. However, those were the only runs the Eagles would be able to push across the plate for the rest of the game.
  • The Maroons led off the top of the fourth with four-straight hits with Butler and Lawn both starting with singles and T. Staz and Langlotz each hitting doubles as the Maroons answered with three runs to retake a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Corey Coogan hit one through the right side to Roanoke ahead 5-3 after four complete.
  • Three more hits by Lawn, T. Staz, and Langlotz in the fifth saw three more Maroon runs cross the plate for an 8-3 lead.
  • But it was the sixth inning that saw the Maroons more than bat the line-up as Roanoke scored eight runs with just one out and nine total off of seven hits, including six singles and a double by Jonny Wall as the Maroons extended their lead to 17-3 after six complete.
  • A Nate Chown double in the eighth scored Bonzon for the final Roanoke run of the game as the Maroons' defense proved to be too strong in the 18-3 win.
  • Jackson Murphy picked up the win, starting the first five innings, striking out three for his third victory of the season.
  • Eight different Maroons had an RBI, led by Langlotz's four as he finished his day 6-for-9 at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored, a double, and a home run.

Up next: Roanoke continues their road trip with a Tuesday, April 18 afternoon contest at Maryville (Tenn.). First pitch with the Scots is scheduled for 4 p.m.
