Maroons Split ODAC Doubleheader at Washington and Lee

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 11, Washington and Lee 5
Records: Maroons 15-8, 8-1 ODAC; Generals 12-10, 6-6 ODAC
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team scored in each of the first three inning en route to an 11-5 win over Washington and Lee in game one of an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Generals would get the split with a 6-3 win over the Maroons in game two. 

Highlights:

  • TThe Maroons used a single and two walks to load the bases with one out to start the top of the first inning. Conner Butler the hit a double to left field that scored both Jonny Wall and Mason Staz to stake the Maroons ahead 2-0. Owen Lawn followed up with a single through the left side that scored Butler and gave the Maroons a 3-0 lead. The Generals answered immediately answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own to tie the score at 3-3. 
  • In the second, Brody Langlotz singled to center and was followed by Jacob Bonzon with a double to right center that allowed Langlotz to score and give the Maroons the lead again, 4-3. 
  • Roanoke used a double by Carson McCusker another single by Langlotz  and a single by Bonzon to score another two runs as the Maroons doubled up the Generals, 6-3.
  • A single run by Roanoke in top of the fifth was answered by a pair from the Royals in the bottom half as the visitors led 7-5 after five complete. 
  • The Maroons put the game away in the top of the eighth with a pair of two RBI home runs by Lawn and Langlotz that gave Roanoke the 11-5 win.
  • Will Turner pitched the first 5.2 winnings to earn the win with Aiden Kuhle closing out the game for the save with eight strikeouts.

Records: Generals 13-10, 7-6 ODAC; Maroons 15-9, 8-2 ODAC

Highlights:

  • W&L would jump out to a 4-0 by the bottom of the fourth, a lead they would keep until the fifth. The Maroons saw Tucker Schiavoni reach on a single to left center and eventually come around on a pair of wild pitches to cut the lead down to 4-1. The Generals answered in their half of the inning with a single run to put their lead back to four runs. 
  • The two teams traded runs again in the seventh inning and Roanoke got a single run in the top of the eighth, as the Generals held on for the 6-3 win and a split of the ODAC doubleheader.

Up next: Roanoke is back at Salem Memorial Ballpark for a non-conference, single game against Pfeiffer on Tuesday, March 21. The first pitch with the Falcons is scheduled for 4 p.m.
