Second Half Surge For Roanoke

The Lead: The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team hosted Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon. The winner would put themselves in a solid position in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. Roanoke would score first by three consecutive goals by the Hornets would give the visitors a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play. After trailing, 6-5, at the half, Roanoke exploded in the second half out-scoring their guests 9-5 to close out the Hornets for the ODAC win.

How it Happened:

  • Riley Chase got the scoring started with the afternoon's first goal less than five-minutes into the matchup. However, the Hornets would seize the momentum with three straight scores.
  • With 3:30 left to play in the opening frame, Sydney Harrison scored to stop the Shenandoah surge but the Hornets answered int the closing seconds to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Nicole Harrison would get the Maroons to within a goal before a pair of Hornet goals allowed the road team to enjoy their largest lead of the game, 6-3. Tiernan Connor scored off a feed from Natalie Mason and 20-seconds later Harrison (Sydney) found Molly Kasemeyer to make it a one-goal game at the half, 6-5.
  • The second half would open with back-to-back Roanoke goals by Harrison (Sydney) and Grace Koutouzis, putting the Maroons in front for the first time since mid-way through the opening quarter. With 2:46 left in the third, Libby Bowman scored to push the RC advantage to 8-6 and the game would head into the final period.
  • Bowman opened the quarter by adding a pair of scores for a personal 3-0 run to put the Maroons in firm control. Shenandoah got to within 11-8 before the Maroons closed the game with three consecutive goals. Connor scored twice with Koutouzis closing out the scoring for the 14-8, ODAC win.
  • Bowman and Conner combined to score six goals on 11 shots. Sydney Harrison and Koutouzis each posted two scores and an assist while Nicole Harrison added two goals.
  • In goal Kyleigh Chickering went the distance, recording seven saves in a winning effort.

Up Next: Roanoke travels to Bridgewater for a game on Tuesday night for a 7:00pm start.
