Roanoke Pulls Away in Second Half

Box Score

The Basics
Score:  Roanoke 8 | Mary Washington 5
Records: Maroons 11-3 / 4-1 ODAC | Eagles 8-8
Location: Fredericksburg, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke women's lacrosse team went on the road to face Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The game with the Eagles would be the final non-conference test for a Maroon squad that received votes this week for the first time in the IWLCA Top 25 poll. The game was tied at the half before the Maroons began to edge away with a 2-0 third quarter. Roanoke built their lead to 8-3 before the home team tried to rally, but in the end, Roanoke came home with an 8-5 victory.

How it Happened:

  • Mary Washington would score the game's lone, first period goal to take an early lead. Libby Bowman scored five-minutes apart in the second quarter, first, off a feed from Riley Chase then with the help of Molly Kasemeyer to give the Maroons their first lead of the afternoon. The Eagles scored with just seconds on the clock to send the game into the half in a 2-2 tie.
  • A pair of unassisted scores in the third would see Roanoke back in front, 4-2. Emerson Foster scored with 5:20 on the clock followed by a Maddie Stopkoski goal three-minutes later.
  • Sydney Harrison owned the fourth quarter as Roanoke began to pull away. Harrison scored in the opening minute and added another at the 9:24 mark. The Eagles got a Free Position goal to make it 6-3. Nicole Harrison scored her first of the evening before Sydney completed her fourth quarter hat trick. Mary Washington would score twice in the final three minutes but it wasn't enough as Roanoke took the game, 8-5.
  • Harrison (Sydney) scored three goals on just three shots. Bowman added two goals with Chase and Kasemeyer accounting for the only Roanoke assists. Addison Schmidt caused a game high four turnovers with Lilly Blair and Sophia Chickering each controlling five draws. In net, Kyleigh Chickering earned her 11th win of the campaign, making five saves along the way.

Up Next: Roanoke play host to Guilford on Saturday at noon. Prior to the opening draw with the Quakers, the seniors will be honored at Kerr stadium.
