Maroons Fall in Championship Rematch

The Lead: The Roanoke women's lacrosse team made the trip to Lexington to face the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champion Washington and Lee on Wednesday night. The Generals defeated the Maroons last spring in the ODAC Championship game and Roanoke looked to get a leg up on the 2022 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament seeding. The game would be tied, 1-1, after on period of play. However, W&L used a 5-1 second to open up an advantage at the break. The Generals continued to build on their lead throughout the second half and picked up the 12-8, ODAC win.   

How it Happened:

  • The opening quarter was played to a 1-1 draw. After falling down by a goal, Lilly Blair scored off a feed from Libby Bowman to tie the game heading into the second quarter.
  • Blair assisted on a Tiernan Connor goal and the game would once again be tied, 2-2, with just over 11-minutes left in the period. Washington and Lee closed the half by scoring four straight goals to take a 6-2 edge into the break.
  • Trailing 9-2, Blair found Molly Kasemeyer before adding a Free Position goal to make it 9-4 with 2:16 left in the quarter. W&L added one more score to take a 10-4 advantage into the final period of play.
  • Conner opened the final 15-minutes with a score set up by Riley Chase. W&L grew their lead to 12-5 before one last Roanoke surge. Kasemeyer had two goals and an assist while Chase added a score and a helper as RC made it 12-8 with just under two-minutes remaining. Roanoke could get no closer as the fell in a rematch of last season's championship game to the Generals.
  • Kasemeyer had three scores and an assist with Blair, and Conner adding a pair of scores each. Blair and Chase added two assists apiece. Sydney Harrison and Addison Schmidt each caused three turnovers. Sophia Chickering secured four draws while Harrison picked up five ground balls. Kyleigh Chickering recorded eight saves while going the distance in goal.

Up Next: Roanoke travels on Sunday to face FDU-Florham in New Jersey for an opening draw at noon.
