The Lead: Roanoke made the trip to our nation's capital on Saturday afternoon to face Catholic. The game would be tied at half and the Cardinals would enjoy a two-goal lead heading into the final period of play. With Catholic up a pair, the Maroons would cut the deficit to a single goal with less than a minute to play. Roanoke gained control but a centering pass was intercepted with just seconds on the clock as Catholic defeated the Maroons, 13-12.

How it Happened:

  • Emerson Foster scored a first quarter goal, but the Maroons trailed, 2-1 after the opening 15-minutes.
  • After falling behind by two, Lilly Blair scored off a feed from Sydney Harrison less than a minute before Maddie Stopkoski scored the equalizer off a pass from Molly Kasemeyer. The teams traded goals, Blair and Tiernan Connor, and the score would be knotted at 5-5 at the break.
  • Harrison gave the Maroons the lead coming out of the half. However, the Cardinals took control scoring four of the next five goals to take a 9-6 advantage with five-minutes remining in the quarter. Foster cut the deficit in half but Catholic responded with two more scores. With less than 30-seconds to go, Blair made it 9-11 with one period left to play.
  • Catholic pushed their lead to three before Blair and Stopkoski answered and the Maroons trailed 12-11 with eight minutes left in the game.
  • Roanoke found themselves down by two heading into the final minute of play. Blair netted her fifth goal of the afternoon to make it 13-12. After a timeout, the Maroons would gain control of the ball to try to set up the game tying goal. A pass to a cutter from the right wing was intercepted by goalie, Rachel Searle, with just :07 on the clock to seal the win for the Cardinals.
  • Blair led all scorers with five goals while Foster and Stopkoski added two scores each. Harrison added a goal and pair of assists for the Maroons. Blair and Natalie Mason each caused a pair of turnovers with Addison Schmidt and Kyleigh Chickering picking up three ground balls apiece. Chickering went the distance on goal, recording nine saves.

Up Next: Roanoke travels to Lynchburg for a non-conference matchup with the Hornets on Wednesday night. The game is scheduled to start at 7:15pm.
