Close Game Goes To Avenging Angels

The Lead: The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team took their #24 national ranking on the road for a non-conference game with Meredith College on Wednesday evening. The Maroons held the lead at the half but the Avenging Angels would take a three-score lead into the final five minutes of play. The Maroons got two of the final three goals but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to Meredith 16-14.  

How it Happened:

  • The home team recorded the first two goals of the game.
  • .Emerson Foster cut the deficit to one and Jenna Kuczo scored off a pass from Lilly Blair to tie the score at 2-2.
  • A three minute stretch would see Meredith open up a three score advantage.
  • Roanoke answered with three straight to tie it up once again. Blair scored off a helper by Morgan Saylor before Riley Chase and Ellie Armstrong scored on two of RC's 11 Free Position attempts.
  • After the Avenging Angels took a one goal advantage, Blair, Foster, and Armstrong would see Roanoke end the half on a 4-2 run to take the lead into the break.
  • The two teams would each score twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Roanoke still in front by one goal.
  • Meredith would re-take the lead and seize control of the momentum with five of the next six scores for a three-goal lead.
  • Kuczo took advantage of a Free Position but Meredith immediately answered to maintain the lead. A late Blair score would make it a 16-14 final.
  • Blair scored six times with one assist while Foster added three goals. Armstrong and Kuczo added a pair of scores apiece with Foster securing 11 draws.
  • In net, Carly Schoudel recorded six saves.
  • Roanoke would out-shoot Meredith 36-25 but 14 saves by Jot Deitrich would be the difference.

Up Next: For the third straight game, Roanoke will be on the road. This time a trip back to North Carolina to face Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup on Saturday, March 27.
