Game 1

The Basics

Score: Roanoke 8, Virginia Wesleyan 4

The Lead: Roanoke rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to take the first game of the ODAC doubleheader 8-4.

How it Happened

  • With VWU leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, RC took advantage of a Marlin error to score a pair of unearned runs on an RBI single by Gavin Kandrick and a double by Scott Ellis.
  • A Zack Clark sacrifice fly and a bunt single by Daniel Petro with two outs each scored a run to put Virginia Wesleyan back on top 3-2.
  • Roanoke tied the game in the eighth on a Jack Howard RBI groundout that scored Cody Shell to make it 3-3.
  • VWU responded the next half inning when Brady Fallon scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game.
  • In the decisive ninth inning, Matt Wojciechowski singled to open the inning and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Tyler De Meo ran for Wojciechowski and scored on a Will Merriken double to tie the game.
  • Cale Agee would then give RC the lead on an RBI single that scored Merriken and he would later come around to score on a Will Smith double that made it 6-4.
  • Smith would eventually score on a wild pitch and Kandrick would cap the scoring with an RBI single that scored Shell and made it 8-4.
  • Kenny Mackovic started for Roanoke and went the first five innings and gave up five hits and one earned run. Doug Avery was tagged with the loss for VWU after giving up three runs without recording an out.

The Lead: Roanoke scored a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Wesleyan winning game two by the score of 9-5.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke opened the scoring in the first inning when Howard singled home Shell to make it 1-0 Maroons.
  • After VWU tied the game in its first at bat, RC would take a 6-1 lead after scoring five runs in the second inning. The highlight of the big inning was a three-run home run by Smith.
  • The Marlins strung together three hits in the bottom of the second inning to push a run across and make it a 6-2 game.
  • In the Maroon fifth inning, Ellis singled to open the inning and Wojciechowski was then hit by a pitch. The pair would later score on a Merriken RBI double that made the score 8-2.
  • VWU would score in the home half of the fifth inning and then tack on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make it an 8-5 game.
  • RC tacked on another run in the ninth inning following a Merriken RBI double that scored Wojciechowski to extend the RC lead to 9-5.
  • Ben West started on the mound for RC and went the first five innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
  • Andrew Lowe started for VWU and 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits.
