The Lead: No. 19 St. Mary's of Maryland held off a Roanoke rally to come away with a 10-9 victory in women's lacrosse action Monday afternoon.
How it Happened
- Roanoke went up 2-0 six minutes into the first-half following goals by Mckenna Polak and Courtney McCartin.
- Goals by SMC's Meg Gesner and Abbey Harrison tied the game with 19:41 left in the first half.
- Morgan Barlow scored a pair of goals to put RC up 4-3, before St. Mary's scored three times, taking a 6-4 lead following a Gabby Beese goal with 7:47 left on the clock.
- McCartin scored 23 seconds after Beese to make it a 6-5 game and that's how it would stand as the teams went to the intermission.
- Allison Beames knotted the game at 6-6 with 22:41 left to go in the game before a four goal run, capped by a Gesner strike made it 10-6 Seahawks with 7:15 to play.
- Lainey Decker sparked a rally for RC with a goal at the 5:24 mark, followed by a Beames score less than a minute later.
- McCartin scored to pull RC within one at 10-9 but that would be as class as the Maroons would get as St. Mary's held on for the victory.
- Emma Blair played the final 37 minutes in the cage for RC, making four key saves in the second-half to keep the Maroons within striking distance.
- McCartin had three goals for Roanoke, while Barlow and Beames each had two. Katie Clements had three assists and grabbed six draw controls.
- SMC held a 22-21 edge in shots and Roanoke won the groundball battle 18-15.
