Feeney Scores Six to Lead Maroons Past Marlins on Senior Day

Box Score SALEM, Va. --- Junior Claire Feeney lit up the Kerr Stadium scoreboard for a game-high six goals, leading Roanoke to an 18-6 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Senior Day in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Friday evening.  Six Maroons scored overall, each notching at least two goals in the contest.

The win moves Roanoke to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the Marlins fall to 8-6 and 4-4.

Before the game, six Maroons were recognized for their hard work over the four years, as Roanoke celebrated women's lacrosse Senior Day.  The six seniors recognized were Kyra Sichelstiel, Darragh Evarts, Alexa Germany, Lauren Curtin, Meghan Gerrie and Allison Shannon.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to inform you that today's women's Lacrosse game between Roanoke College and Virginia Wesleyan has been designated as a "Cancer Awareness Game." The Maroons are wearing tie-dye shirts to represent the many colors of cancer.  The team is playing in memory of Evan Nicholson who passed in 2009 of Leukemia and MaDee Boxler who passed in February 2010 while battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma and in memory of Katherine Grant, who passed away in August of 2013 and Joe Blanda who passed away in 2015.  The team is also wearing blue and purple tie die shirts for Lee Walter, Reed Walters Father who is battling cancer and Kalee Robinson, a Senior here at Roanoke and member of Delta Gamma who is fighting cancer right now.

All three young adults have non-profits or scholarships named for them.  MaDee Boxler has The MaDee Project, Evan Nicholson has the Evan Nicholson Memorial Scholarship, and Katherine Grant has a non-profit called "Grant Us A Cure"

The Maroons put together a pair of extended scoring runs, finishing the game on a five-goal string to blow it open.  But it was a seven-goal run spanning halftime that gave RC its advantage.  Roanoke led 3-2 midway thru the first half thanks to goals from Allison Beames, Meredith Biegelow and Feeney.  The floodgates opened at the 14:34-mark via a free position tally from Nicole Zelnik.

After a 10-minute goalless stretch, Roanoke found the net three times before halftime.  Beames scored off a dish from Feeney at 4:39, marking the first assisted goal of the game.  Feeney and Makenzie Haymaker followed with tallies, the latter strike proving to be the final goal of the half towards a 7-2 RC lead at the intermission.

Haymaker opened the Maroons' second-half account a little over three minutes in.  Feeney and Zelnik followed with two more scores for a 10-2 Maroons' advantage.

Megan Schallock broke RC's scoring run with her second goal of the contest at the 24:09-mark.  Candace Carey followed just 25-seconds later, cutting the Maroons' lead to 10-4.

Feeney reestablished RC's eight-goal margin with two straight tallies off feeds from Haymaker and Zelnik, respectively.  Schallock and Darragh Evarts traded goals before Brooke Cabeceiras registered the Marlins final tally with 14:20 on the scoreboard and RC leading, 13-6.

Roanoke followed with a five-goal game-ending run, led-off by Beames' third tally.  Bigelow and Evarts followed Beames' example by converting free position attempts, while Feeney capped her day with an unassisted tally with 7:03 to go.  Evarts put the finishing touches on the Maroons' offensive outburst, scoring via a Bigelow helper 3:21 prior to the final horn.

The Maroons out-shot VWC, 32-24, and enjoyed narrow margins in ground balls (21-17) and draw controls (14-11).  The two squads combined for 21 turnovers in the first half, but tidied up their efforts with only 10 combined giveaways over the final 30 minutes.  RC converted 6-of-9 free position shots, while the Marlins were 3-of-9.

Feeney led all players with seven points on six goals and one assist.  She also controlled a team-best six draws and led RC with two caused turnovers.  Beames, Bigelow, Evarts, Haymaker and Zelnik each notched three points.  Beames and Evarts recorded hat-tricks, while Bigelow, Haymaker and Zelnik had two goals and one assist apiece.  Lauren Curtin spent 45:40 protecting the Maroons cage, making nine saves.  Allison Shannon finished the contest, registering one stop.

Schallock led VWC with three goals to go with a game-high seven draw controls.  Cabeceiras scored twice, while Carey had one tally.  Amari Agee earned game-best honors with three caused turnovers.  Madison Carroll made eight saves before being subbed out after 50:42 in front of the Marlins' net.  Catie Amasia made one stop in a little over nine-minutes of field time.

Roanoke is back in action on Wednesday, April 15, as the Maroons travel to Lynchburg College.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Shellenberger Field.
