Roanoke Drops Two Against #17 Shenandoah on Monday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team dropped two games to #17 ranked Shenandoah University in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Shenandoah won the first game 10-2, and the second game by the score of 8-1. The Maroons are now 1-4 on the season, 0-2 in the ODAC, while the Hornets are 2-0 to start the season.

The Maroons were in action for the first time in almost a month, having a number of games cancelled due to the multiple snow storms in the area. Six games were either postponed or cancelled, with a number of other games being rescheduled for later in the season.

Roanoke faced off against a tough #17 ranked Shenandoah team in both games. The Hornets scored four runs in the first four innings before the Maroons could respond with runs of their own. In the bottom of the fourth, Will Black led off with an infield single. Collier Donald stepped up to the plate next and earned a walk, moving Black to second base. After one out, and a pitching change for the Hornets, Devin Cassity grounded out to the pitcher, but it advanced Donald to second and Black to third. Gavin Pellitteri took a walk to load the bases for Clark Crutchfield. Crutchfield hit a two RBI single to left field, scoring both Donald and Black to get the Maroons within two, 4-2.

However, those would be the only runs Roanoke scored in the remainder of the contest, as the #17 Hornets put up six more runs over the next five innings. Roanoke took a loss in game one, 10-2.

Shenandoah came out of the locker room hot to start the second game, putting up four runs in the first, which included a home run from Nolan Overby. Roanoke tallied their lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Will Decker opened the frame with a single to left field. Will Black reached on a fielder's choice, which also saw Decker take second base. After a ground out that advanced the two baserunners, Collier Donald hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Will Decker, and getting the Maroons within three runs. The Hornets put up two more runs in the third, then another pair in the sixth, as Roanoke fell 8-1 in the second game of the day.

The Maroons finished with four hits in game two, led by Will Decker with two, while Gavin Pellitteri and Lucas Nowlin had one each. Decker had the lone run while Donald finished with one RBI. Austin Gregory was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight runs in six innings, but still struck out four batters.
