Baseball Wins Third Straight, Defeats Guilford 12-10

Box Score SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team won its third straight game, defeating Guilford College 12-10 on Tuesday night.  The Maroons now have a record of 8-11, 3-7 ODAC, while the Quakers sit with a mark of 11-16, 4-8 in ODAC play.
 
The Quakers got on the board in the top of the first inning after John Macon Smith hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Herc Ingels on the play, taking a 1-0 lead.  After Guilford loaded the bases, Michael Whited hit a three RBI double to right center field, extending the Quakers lead to 4-0.
 
The Maroons answered in the bottom of the inning, starting with Will Decker hitting an RBI infield single with the bases loaded, bringing home Devin Cassity.  The very next batter, Lucas Nowlin hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, scoring Will Black.  Roanoke squared the game up at 4-4 after Cam Cassady hit a two RBI single to left center field, bringing around Decker and Clifton.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the third, and the bases loaded, Will Decker hit a two RBI double right on the left field line, scoring Cassity and Danny Creel on the play.  Nowlin followed suit with a two RBI hit of his own, bringing around both Wills, Decker and Black.  After three, Roanoke led 8-4.  The Maroons added another two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Cassady, who advanced to second on a throwing error was knocked in by Danny CreelWill Decker followed later with a sharply hit single past the first baseman, plating Will Black.
 
The Quakers made headway in cutting down at the deficit after they loaded the bases in the top of the fifth.  Nathan Fulbright dropped a no-outs hit right on the right field line to score a run and get back within five, 10-5.  The next batter John Macon Smith hit a grand slam over the right field wall to bring the Quakers within one, 10-9 after the top of the inning.
 
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Decker hit an RBI double, advancing to third on the throw, as Jacob Clifton scored all the way from first.  Two batters later, Kevin Oakey hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Nowlin. After six innings, Roanoke held a 12-9 advantage over the Quakers.  Guilford didn't let the three run deficit hold them down as Corey Wallace led off the inning with a home run off the top of the left field wall, bringing the Quakers back within two, 12-10.  The Maroons were able to hold off Guilford for the remainder of the contest as Roanoke picked up the ODAC victory.
 
Will Decker led the Maroons in hitting, going 6-6 on the evening, hitting three doubles and picking up five RBIs.  Kevin Oakey and Danny Creel each tallied three hits each, while Lucas Nowlin picked up three RBIs.  Jacob McMillan earned the victory giving up no runs off no hits in two innings pitched.  Austin Gregory picked up his second save of the season as well.
 
Guilford was led in hitting by Tyler Peterson, who hit 3-5 in the game.  Five different Quakers tallied two hits apiece.  John Macon Smith finished with five RBIs and two runs scored, after hitting his grand slam in the contest.  Lou Trosch was tabbed with the loss, giving up seven runs off seven hits.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd as they take on Ferrum College for the third time this season.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch.
