FERRUM – The Roanoke College baseball team picked up its first win of the season after scoring in the top of the ninth to defeat Ferrum, 2-1 on Wednesday. The Maroons now have a record of 1-2, while the Panthers are 1-1.
The win marks the first victory for Roanoke in the Matt McGuire era. This is also the first win over Ferrum for the Maroons since the start of the 2010 season.
The Panthers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third. The leadoff batter, Justin Cox, took a walk to reach base. Just two batters later, Taryn Hayden hit an RBI single to right field, plating Cox to give Ferrum the 1-0 lead.
In the next half inning, the Maroons knotted the game at 1-1.
Brian Kluge reached base on a walk to start off the inning. With two outs, Kluge had advanced over to third base, then
Cody Craft hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Kluge.
In the top of the ninth,
Bradley Mattox led off the inning with a single to left center. He advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from
Jacob Clifton. With two outs, Boone Hagy hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Mattox from second and giving the Maroons the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers put a runner on third with no outs, but
Austin Gregory sat down the next three batters with a strike out and two ground ball outs to give the Maroons their first win of the season.
Five different Maroons walked away from the contest with one hit each: Mattox, Craft, Hagy,
Cam Cassady and
Caylen Baire. Craft and Hagy had an RBI each, while Mattox and Kluge scored for the squad.
Chad Hill pitched three innings for Roaonke, giving up one run off two hits and striking out two.
Joe Sherbo picked up the victory on the afternoon. He pitched one full inning and struck out one.
For Ferrum, Hayden, Matt Reynolds and Trey Laney each had one hit. Justin Cox scored the lone run for the Panthers. Jake Perkins pitched five innings and gave up one run off two hits, while striking out four.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 16
th as the Maroons host Frostburg State University at Kiwanis Field in Salem. The double-header starts at 12:00 PM on Saturday.
