Maroons Fall in Non-Conference Game to Methodist on Sunday

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Roanoke College baseball team fell in non-conference action to Methodist University, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.  The Maroons now have a record of 0-2, while the Monarchs are 2-0 to open the season.
 
The Monarchs put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning, as Stephen Nalls crossed the plate after a wild pitch.  The Maroons answered in top of the fourth as Nick Sburlati hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Jacob Clifton from second.  The Maroons were able to get three outs in four batters in the bottom of the inning, ending the fourth tied 1-1.
 
Brian Kluge reached base in the top of the fourth on an infield single.  Two batters later Kluge gave Roanoke the lead by crossing the plate after an error from the right fielder.  At the end of five, Roanoke led 2-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Monarchs tied the game back up at 2-2 after Tyler Younger hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Travis Johnson from third.  But, it was the eighth inning that sealed the contest for Methodist.  With one out, the Monarchs hit three consecutive singles, scoring one run.  They followed with a ground-out to first, scoring Chris Power from third.  Finally, Nalls hit an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Will Buschmann.  After eight, Methodist held a 5-2 lead.  That score would hold as the final tally in the non-conference matchup.
 
Kluge and Sburlati each had two hits on the afternoon, with Kluge scoring one run and Sburlati earning an RBI.  Clifton was 1-3 on the day with one run.  Cameron Holshouser pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out three.
 
Six different players had hits for the Monarchs, while five different players crossed the plate.  Tyler Younger scored the winning run for Methodist.  Daniel Royer picked up the win, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 6th as they travel to face off against Ferrum in non-conference action.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM first pitch.
