Women's Lacrosse Advances to ODAC Semifinals with 26-8 victory over Randolph-Macon

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke outscored Randolph-Macon, 18-2 in the final 45-minutes to win, 26-8 in the ODAC Quarterfinals Saturday at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons, who advance to the ODAC Semifinals, improve to 11-7 while the Yellow Jackets season closes with a 7-10 mark.
The Maroons, who are now 31-15-1 all-time vs. R-MC, have a 9-2 record against the Yellow Jackets in the ODAC Tournament. RC has won five of the last six meetings against its conference opponent.
In the ODAC Tournament, Roanoke is now 44-18, playing in its first ODAC Quarterfinal since 2007. The Maroons improved to 16-1 in conference quarterfinal games. The 26 goals are tied for a season-high as the women have scored at least 20 goals over the last four games.
The day belonged to both Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ) and Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School), as they scored 10 points each. Rourke is one goal shy of the single-season school-record with 75 this spring. Valles, who moved into second on the NCAA Div. III all-time scoring list with 408 career points, has 74 goals on the season and is in the midst of breaking another school-record.
Roanoke out-shot Randolph-Macon, 49-18, won in the groundball category, 36-17 and held a 21-14 advantage in draw controls. The Roanoke defense was able to break up 12-of-18 clear attempts by R-MC and forced 25 turnovers.
Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) had a great afternoon as she totaled five goals and three assists in addition to five groundballs. Allison Bonanno (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) totaled a goal and four assists while Emily Knade (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) added three goals. Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) finished with two goals and an assist along with five draw controls.
Erin Clare Cassidy and Emily Lynch finished with two goals each for R-MC. Both Kelly Egan and Elyse Cooper had a goal and an assist.
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) (1-0) collected five first-half saves in her first win in goal this season. Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) had two saves in the second half for the Maroons. Alex Flammia finished with 15 saves for Randolph-Macon.
The women will travel to Lynchburg College on Wednesday, May 4 in the ODAC Semifinals. The Hornets defeated the Maroons, 12-11 in last year's conference semifinal, which broke a five-game series win-streak. The game time will be determined on Monday morning.
