Roanoke Splits Weekend at Averett Classic to Open 2010 Season

DANVILLE, Va. --- Roanoke Volleyball opened the 2010 season at the Averett Classic. The Maroons split four games in the weekend to start the year, 2-2. The women dropped two games on Saturday to Bridgewater and Guilford, but rebounded with wins over Emory & Henry and Greensboro to close the weekend.

Bridgewater rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Roanoke in the tournament-opener, 3-2. Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) led the Maroons with 11 kills and 10 digs while Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) added 10 kills with 10 digs. Bren Wilberger (Richmond, VA, Steward ) and Leah Horan (Richmond, VA, Freeman) had 16 and 14 assists, respectively. Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt) finished with 23 digs.

In the second match, Roanoke fell to Guilford in four sets. Wilberger recorded a 34 assists. Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance) added nine kills while Kayla Paxton (Salem, VA, Salem) had three blocks. Wagner finished with eight kills and nine digs while Martin added 11 digs.

The Maroons defeated Emory & Henry, 3-0 in Sunday's first contest. Wilberger continued her terrific weekend with 29 assists. Wagner paced Roanoke with 15 digs and seven kills in addition to Largen's 10 kills. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt) finished with a weekend-best six kills and four blocks while Martin added 20 digs in the contest.

Roanoke went out on a positive note with a 3-1 victory over Greensboro to conclude the tournament. Wagner totaled a weekend-best 16 kills and 15 digs, followed by Largen with 15 kills in the match. Wilberger had a season-best 48 assists. Martin came up with 25 digs and Kylie Lucas added 14 digs and a team-best five blocks. Moats chipped in four blocks.

Martin, who totaled 79 digs on the weekend, was voted to the Averett Classic All-Tournament Team. She passed Melissa Slusher '03 for second on the career digs list with 1,108.

After her 50 kills in four games, Wagner moved into seventh all-time in kills with 702. Her 49 digs in the tournament gives her 765 for her career, which moved her into seventh on the all-time list. She needs two more to pass Molly Zigler '00 for sixth on that list. She needs four kills to pass Zigler for sixth on that list. Largen's 31 kills over the weekend moved into 10th on the career kills list with 624.

The women will travel to Ferrum on Tuesday, Sept. 8 in non-conference action. The Maroons are 37-17 against the Panthers and haven't lost in the series since 1997. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
