Valles Leads Maroons to 16-5 Win Over Randolph-Macon

SALEM, Va. --- Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )had a career night in a 16-5 win over Randolph-Macon on Tuesday evening. The Maroons improved to 5-5 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets fall to 5-3, 3-2 in conference play.
Valles scored seven goals, six in the first half, along with four assists to set career-highs in all three categories. She was a part in all but one of the nine goals for the Maroons in the first half. The seven goals ties a school-record while the 11 points is a new unofficial school-record. Her 61 points and 46 goals tops the ODAC this season and are ranked among the national ranks.
The Maroons, now 29-15-1 against the Yellow Jackets, beat their ODAC-foe for the third time in the last four meetings. They return to .500 for the first time since starting the season, 1-1 after the first weekend of the season.
Roanoke outshot Randolph-Macon, 32-21, won the groundball battle, 20-14, and were 3-for-7 on free-position shots. They were 15-of-18 in clear attempts and caused 22 Yellow Jacket turnovers.
Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)finished with two goals and three assists, in addition to a career-high five caused turnovers. Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)with a goal and three assists and three groundballs. She moved into 10th on the career scoring list with 163 points, just one shy of ninth-place. She is now tied for seventh in career assists with 65, just three away from fifth on that list. Sunni Ray (Severna Park, MD, Severn)added a goal and an assist in the win, moving five points closer to becoming the 29th member of the 100-point club at Roanoke.
Cristina Schicolone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished with seven saves in goal for the Maroons. Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor)and Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford)won three draw controls each.
Elyse Cooper had two goals for R-MC, followed by Erin Clare Cassidy with a goal and an assist. Alex Flammia stopped nine shots in goal.
The women will travel to Bridgewater in ODAC action on Thursday, April 8. The Maroons are 28-3-1 all-time against the Eagles, with the last defeat coming in 1986. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
