SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke finished 3-1 on the weekend to place third in the 2010 Maroon Classic held at the Bast Center. Maryville (12-12) won the title, followed by Averett (16-8) which finished 3-1 to finish second. The Maroons improved to 18-4 on the year, 6-1 in the ODAC.
Roanoke, which already surpassed last year's win total, were led by
Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who earned a spot on the 2010 Maroon Classic All-Tournament Team. The Cave Spring product finished the weekend with 33 kills, 11 aces, 49 digs and nine blocks.
Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) also finished with a team-best 33 kills and 11 aces on the weekend in addition to 37 digs.
Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt) had 48 digs while
Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA, Lafayette) and
Bren Wilberger (Richmond, VA, Steward ) combined for 120 assists.
Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt),
Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook) and
Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance) combined for 44 blocks.
Against Randolph, the Maroons swept the Wildcats in three sets with scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-7. Largen and Hawkins led Roanoke with four kills each. Largen also totaled two aces and two block solos while Hawkins added three blocks (one solo). Martin had a game-best seven digs while Lucas finished with two kills, two aces and five blocks (three solo).
In the second game of the tournament, Roanoke fell to Averett in five sets. The scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25, and 15-17. The Maroons have lost three consecutive matches to the Cougars, trailing in the all-time series, 6-12. The loss snaps an eight-game win-streak, which tied the longest of the season.
Wagner paced Roanoke with 14 kills, 18 digs, four aces, and three blocks. Moats posted a career-high 12 kills, while Hawkins added a season-high 10 kills on the evening. Willberger and Stone registered 24 and 20 assists, respectively, while Martinrecorded 17 digs in the loss.
Roanoke defeated Southern Virginia, 3-1 in the first match on Saturday. The scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-8, and 25-19. The Maroons, who has taken four of the last six meetings against the Knights, improved 8-10 in the series.
Largen led the team with 14 kills, 12 digs, and three serving aces. Wagner chipped in 8 kills with a season-best 23 digs, while Martin had 16 digs for the match. Both Wilberger (18) and Stone (17) were in double figures for assists. Moats contributed five kills and a career-best seven blocks (three solo). Martin had four serving aces to help the Maroons get their second win of the tournament.
In the final match of the 2010 Maroon Invitational, Roanoke cruised to a 3-0 victory over Ferrum. The Maroons improve to 40-17 in the series, claiming the last 23 meetings since head coach Blair Trail came to Roanoke in 1997 as a player for the Maroon-and-White. She holds a 20-0 record against the Panthers.
Wagner paced Roanoke with 10 kills, four aces, five digs and two block assists. Largen added seven kills, three aces and 11 digs to lead the Maroons. Hawkins finished with five kills and five blocks (three solo) for a career-high in that category.
The women return to ODAC play as they host ODAC-rival, Washington and Lee at home on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Bast Center. The Maroons ended the Generals eight-straight ODAC Tournament Title run last November in the ODAC Quarterfinals in a five-set come-from-behind victory. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
